Feel your soul, listen to your heart …by Raine Sillito, an SDGI learner

I heard something in Spanish once, and it has stayed with me: Siente tu alma, escucha tucorazon. Feel your soul, listen to your heart.

In our present day society, so many people are disconnected, from themselves, from each other, from nature, from life. Disconnected from our own hearts.

Education and learning in our society today is spent breaking things down into boxes, compartments. I have never been a traditional student, but I have spent a lot of time observing classes that my peers attended, and working in classrooms. Everything is separate. If you do an art project, it is separate from science, from math, from literature. Even life is separate from the learning that happens in schools.

I believe that everything is interconnected

I believe that everything is interrelated, interconnected. If all learning is compartmentalized as in traditional schools, we lessen our opportunities and damage ourselves. We are cutting off parts of ourselves and packaging them, storing them in separate boxes. As a child I remember being able to flow from one thing to the next, learning math while I played the piano, learning about symmetry while I played outside, learning about science while my mom read aloud to me. Everything was possible, and everything I did was such a natural part of my life.

Learning is a natural part of life

Learning is a natural part of living life, and that is the founding principle I will start with. People will choose freedom when they see that freedom works—I want to show people that we can trust children to freely create their own lives.
